Don’t abdicate to AI what God delegates to you. Here’s how.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills—to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts.” (Exodus 31:1-5)

We’re in a series laying down some biblical guardrails for working with AI. Here’s Guardrail #2: Don’t use AI to abdicate what God delegates.

There are certain tasks within your work you sense God has uniquely wired you to do. Call it your “vocation,” “calling,” “zone of genius,” whatever. But you know it when you see it.

Bezalel was called “to engage in all kinds of crafts” in the construction of the Tabernacle. I know God has wired me to write and communicate complex truths simply and practically.

Ephesians 2:10 says “we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” If you suspect that you, like Bezalel and me, have found the specific “good works” God has prepared you to do, don’t ever abdicate that anointing.

And trust me: I know how tempting that can be. Because even though writing is “my thing,” it is still really freaking hard some days. It would be way easier for me to ask ChatGPT or Claude to write this devotional for me. But when you and I chose to follow Jesus, we didn’t sign up for easy. We signed up for holy. Which is why I am refusing to abdicate to AI what God has delegated to me.

Here’s one practical way to do this, inspired by my friend Andy Crouch. Think about your tasks in three buckets: Expert, Amateur, and Ignorant.

For tasks you are expert in, use AI to assist but never abdicate for the reasons explained above.

For tasks you are ignorant in, use AI to explore but never execute, because you aren’t qualified to spot hallucinations that can harm you and others.

For tasks you are amateur in, use AI freely but never foolishly as we explored last week.

Here are some examples of how this framework plays out for me personally.

If you find this tool helpful, download a template of it here and jot down some positive and negative examples for each column. And remember this: AI can be a great tool to help you hone your craft, but don’t you dare let it lead you to phone-in your craft and neglect the good works God has prepared for you to do.
